Horse Riding Lessons at Plum Lake
Whether you’re brand new to horses or ready to deepen your skills, Horse Riding Lessons at Plum Lake Event & Equestrian Center offer a welcoming, educational, and inspiring experience for all ages.
Meet Your Instructor: Penny Wahlgren
Penny brings over three decades of riding experience and a lifelong passion for horses to every lesson she teaches. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with an Equine Emphasis from UW–River Falls, she also spent time as a zookeeper at the Indy Zoo, which reflects her lifelong dedication to animal care and education.
She specializes in Dressage and has taught riders from age 5 to 72, helping each student gain confidence, develop balance, and experience the joy of working with horses.
Penny believes in creating moments of connection and learning between horse and rider – and helping the student learn why things are done, and understanding “the why” of horse handling.
What You’ll Learn
Our riding lessons are grounded in:
- Safe, supervised horsemanship
- Hands-on horse leading, grooming and care
- Understanding horse anatomy, movement (gaits), and behavior
- Building a respectful partnership with your horse
- Dressage fundamentals for those ready to go deeper
Lessons are held on-site in a heated arena at Plum Lake Event & Equestrian Center in Sayner, WI, a peaceful setting that allows students to breathe deep, stay present, and fully enjoy their time in the barn.
Why Start with Lessons?
Even if you dream of owning your own horse, Penny encourages all young riders to first spend time with a variety of horses and learn from experienced instructors. As she shares:
” Alot of young students think they want a horse – but they don’t yet know how to care for one. Riding a variety of horses before owning one makes you a better rider.“
